The first day of the Games got off to a good start for Team USA: America’s Virginia Thrasher won the first gold at Rio in the women’s 10-meter air rifle.
Thrasher, 19, beat Du Li of China in the final round with a total score of 208. Yi Siling, also of China, received the bronze.
A freshman at West Virginia University, Thrasher is a native of Springfield, Virginia. She’s ranked number 23 in the world.
This marks the first time the U.S. got the first gold of the Games since Sydney in 2000.
